How I Paint My Paintings – From Idea to Canvas

The Beginning: An Idea, A Feeling

My paintings are rarely planned. Most of the time, everything starts with a feeling – a mood, a moment, a color that I can't let go of. Sometimes it's a Sunday morning, sometimes a walk through Hamburg. I capture these moments – in sketches, photos, or simply in my mind.

The Canvas Awaits

Before I make the first brushstroke, I prepare my canvas. I work mainly with acrylic and oil paints – sometimes mixed. Each medium has its own character: acrylic dries quickly and allows for spontaneous decisions, oil stays open longer and layers wonderfully.

I prime the canvas myself – this gives me control over the texture and the surface I'm working on.

The Process: Intuitive and Honest

I paint intuitively. This means: no finished image in my head, no strict plan. I start, observe, react. Sometimes I paint over everything and start anew.

My subjects are often everyday – table scenes, people, animals, landscapes. But I paint them as I feel them, not as they are. That makes each painting unique.

When is a Painting Finished?

That's the hardest question. I often let a painting sit for a few days and then look at it with fresh eyes. When I don't want to change anything anymore – then it's finished.
